County Mayo

Rising high above Clew Bay, conical Croagh Patrick is Ireland’s holy mountain. Every year thousands of pilgrims ascend the imposing summit, most of them on the last Sunday in July, and some barefoot. St Patrick is said to have spent Lent here in 441. There are views of the wide bay and the hills of counties Mayo, Clare and Galway.

Westport ™ [map], at the head of Clew Bay, is an example of 18th-century urban planning. The Mall boulevard follows the Carrowbeg River. Outside the town, the home of the Marquess of Sligo can be visited. Westport House (daily, usually 10am–6pm but hours vary greatly so check online, closed Jan–Feb; www.westporthouse.ie) is palatial, with paintings, silver and glassware. There is a Pirate Adventure Park with flume rides and dungeons.

Castlebar, a quiet partly Georgian town, is the county town of Mayo. To the east, in Turlough, The National Museum of Country Life # [map] (Tue–Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 2–5pm; free; www.museum.ie) houses the National Folklife Collection, a series of hugely entertaining displays illustrating rural life in Ireland from 1850 to about 1950.
